Tamika Walker

Level TwoInstructor

Tamika Walker is Cynthia Lochard's daughter and one of the youngest instructors in the world to achieve certification in the true Pilates method. Certified in New York and now a Level IV Instructor Trainer at Pilates Method Studio, she has grown up around classical Pilates her entire life — absorbing the method from the inside long before she taught it.

Tamika brings a patient, highly attentive approach to clients navigating the physical changes of midlife and beyond. Her clients are typically 50 to 80 years old, many discovering Pilates for the first time or returning after a long break. Trained to work safely with arthritis and osteoporosis, she calibrates every session to the person in front of her — never asking anyone to do what a thirty-year-old does, but asking instead what movement looks like for your body, at your age, with your history.

Questions & Answers

Here are some questions answered by Tamika in relation to Pilates.

What’s your goal for your clients?

Independence. The clients I work with aren’t training for aesthetics — they’re training to get off the floor without help, carry the groceries, travel, and live fully for as long as possible. The research is consistent: the people who stay mobile and independent into their 70s and 80s are the ones who maintained strength and movement quality through their 50s and 60s. That’s what every session is quietly building toward.

What does a first session with you look like?

Gentle, thorough, and unhurried. We move slowly and deliberately so I can understand how you move and where your body needs attention. It can feel surprisingly engaging — not because anything is strenuous, but because conscious, controlled movement asks something different of the body than we’re used to. Most clients leave the first session feeling they’ve finally found the right place to start.

I have a condition like arthritis or osteoporosis — can you work with me?

Yes. These are among the conditions I work with most often, and I’m specifically trained to do so safely. With arthritis, I work around pain rather than through it and adjust every session to where you are that day. With osteoporosis, I know which exercises to remove, which to modify, and which are actively beneficial — and I’ll always ask about your bone density scores and any fracture history before we begin. For many clients, this is the first exercise that has felt both safe and effective.

Who do you work best with?

My clients are typically between 50 and 80. Many are discovering Pilates for the first time, or coming back after a long break. Some are managing arthritis or osteoporosis, some are worried about balance, and some simply want to stay strong and independent as they age. What they have in common is a real motivation to change how they’re ageing — and that’s exactly where I do my best work.

What’s your background?

I’m Cynthia Lochard’s daughter, and I was one of the youngest instructors in the world to certify in the true Pilates method. I trained and certified in New York, and I’m now a Level IV Instructor Trainer here at Pilates Method Studio. Growing up inside this method means I absorbed it from the inside long before I taught it — and it’s given me a deep instinct for how the classical work should feel and progress.

What’s it like to work with you?

Patient, attentive, and completely tailored to you. I’ve spent my whole life around classical Pilates, and what I’ve learned is that working with older clients is less about the exercises and more about listening — to your history, your concerns, and what your body is telling us on any given day. I’m not asking you to do what a thirty-year-old does. I’m asking what good movement looks like for your body, at your age, with everything you bring to it.

A note from Cynthia
Where are you starting from?
Four short questions. Whatever your answers, the classical method meets you exactly where you are — these just help you see your own starting point more clearly.
